Windows 7 trial versions schedule announced

Business IT - Technology

People wanting to try out prerelease versions of Windows 7 have until August 15 to download the release candidate, but users of the Beta will want to move faster than that.

In a blog post , Microsoft Senior Community Manager Stephen L. Rose announced that the Windows 7 release candidate (RC) download program closes August 15.

That's the last day you can download the RC, but you can install it later and get a key if you need to.

But if you're still using the Windows 7 Beta, you'd better plan to upgrade within a week.

Starting July 1, says Rose, the Beta will start to reboot every two hours. (Insert obligatory wisecrack about Vista here.)

The Beta won't expire until August 1, but it's hard to imagine getting any serious testing done in two-hour increments.

For its part, the RC is scheduled to start rebooting every two hours on March 1 of next year and expire completely on June 1, giving users 4 to 6 months after the product officially goes on sale to upgrade to the paid version.

Instructions for ownloading the RC and getting a product key are here .
