Microsoft student email for WA TAFE

Business IT - Technology

Microsoft’s hosted Live@edu student email solution has been deployed by one of Australia’s largest TAFE colleges, Central TAFE in Western Australia.

Central TAFE previously had no student email services in place, and is now trialling Live@edu with 500 students, and following completion of the pilot, up to 15,000 students will be issued with Live@edu email addresses.

The Central TAFE collaborated with ten other TAFE Colleges in Western Australia in a public tender process, issuing an expression of interest to providers of hosted email services in September last year, before a WA TAFE working committee decided on Microsoft’s Live@edu solution for Central TAFE.

After the pilot phase concludes, each of the WA TAFEs that were part of the initial tender will also consider deployment of  Live@edu.  If all 10 of the Western Australia TAFE colleges follow suit, around 120,000 students would have access to the Live@edu service across the State.

The Live@edu suite of online applications and services includes Microsoft Outlook Live, Microsoft Office Live Workspace and SkyDrive storage, and Central TAFE’s managing director, Neil Fernandes, says the Live@edu platform was “exactly the solution Central TAFE was looking for” to meet the growing needs of the college’s students.

“We will be introducing a robust student email offering, that enables connectivity and collaboration right across our campuses.”

According to education director for Microsoft Australia, Neil Jackson, there’s growing momentum behind the Live@edu student email system, with the solution, which he maintains provides educational facilities with a “cost effective and advanced email service without significantly impacting their budgets.”

Jackson says the service provides a significant number of benefits and opportunities including increased mailbox capacity (10GB) and 20MB attachments as well as calendaring and contact management.
