Apple's iPhone activation servers appear to have been temporarily overwhelmed by owners rushing to update to the latest iPhone 3.0 software after it was released overnight.

iPhone 3.0 was released overnight, and while some early adopters report trouble-free upgrades there have been some complaints.

Actually downloading the software seems to have been trouble-free in most cases, although there have been a few contrary experiences.

More complaints have been caused by Apple's servers failing to respond to activation requests. Such reports have been seen from users in various countries.

Patience - in terms of repeated update attempts if necessary, as well as allowing the update process to run to completion - seems to be the answer at this stage.

One owner has reported that the process can take about half an hour, (excluding download time, which partly depends on the speed of your connection), warning that there are times when the progress bar moves very slowly.

Unless you're desperate for the new features, it might be preferable to wait for the initial rush to die down.

But given the number of security fixes included in the update, you probably shouldn't delay too long.

Other issues that may affect your decision include waiting for the availability of an unofficial unlock (eg yellowsn0w) or 3.0-compatible versions of certain apps (eg, Metlink).
