Websense has been awarded a US patent for its web filtering technology.

The patent, (No 6,947,985, entitled: Filtering Techniques for Managing Access to Internet Sites or Other Software Applications) is the company's second patent for its filtering technology and according to Websense, covers several key areas of competitive differentiation. Specifically, the patent enables network administrators in organisations to control staff access to bandwidth-intensive websites such as streaming media, Internet radio and TV, personal network storage/backup, internet telephony, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, based on current network traffic levels.

Websense also has additional patents pending relating to its WebCatcher and AppCatcher technologies. WebCatcher ensures that new or not yet classified websites visited by employees are categorised and added to the Websense Master Database. AppCatcher ensures that new or not yet classified applications and executables launched by employees are categorised and added to the Websense Master Database.
