Action! TiVo movie downloads shift up a gear

Business IT - Technology

The TiVo/Blockbuster movie download service has moved into full production with a catalogue of more than 100 titles.

Last December saw a pilot of the Blockbuster movie download service for TiVO users. That was limited to one movie per week, ostensibly as a customer awareness building exercise.

73 percent of TiVo customers downloaded at least one movie during the pilot, which could also be interpreted as a gentle start to shake any bugs out of the system before opening the throttle.

And the throttle has indeed been opened. TiVo owners now have the choice of more than 100 DVD-quality movies (with 5.1 sound) on demand.

New releases cost $A5.95, while "all time favourites" are $A3.95. A few titles will be available as sponsor-supported free samples.

(For comparison, new rental releases at Apple's iTunes Store are $A5.99.)

"The launch of the Blockbuster Movies on Demand service establishes a key milestone for us; the ability to enjoy DVD-quality movie content with true 5.1 channel surround sound downloaded straight into the living room with a TiVo media device," said Robbee Minicola, CEO of TiVo licensee Hybrid Television Services.

"This service demonstrates you can have exactly what you want, when you want it... without any need for a monthly subscription fee. This broadband service launch is a fundamental milestone in TiVo's evolution in Australia."

One problem with high-quality movie downloads is that the file size is relatively large in comparison with the quota provided by less expensive Internet plans, and that has the potential for pricey excess-data charges. TiVo content falls into Internode's unmetered category, but there's no indication of similar deals with other ISPs.
