IBM licenses Oracle compatibility software

Business IT - Technology

EnterpriseDB, the company behind Postgres Plus Advanced Server, announced that IBM has licensed its Oracle Database compatibility technology for use with IBM's DB2 9.7.
Enterprise DB's open-source Postgres Plus Advanced Server provides "deep Oracle compatibility" that, the company claims, enables customers to easily deploy new Oracle-compatible applications and databases.

The licensing agreement means that IBM's DB2 will also be able to support Oracle-compatible applications.

"Database switching costs and risks have been a painful IT problem for decades," said EnterpriseDB CEO Ed Boyajian in the announcement.

"The database software landscape has historically been defined by vendor lock-in and limited application portability, and organizations are tired of it. We're pleased to partner with IBM to give customers greater flexibility and control over their database management alternatives."

The result, according to both companies, is that Oracle customers can migrate their databases and applications without extensive reprogramming or retraining.

"Our clients are increasingly taking advantage of DB2 to lower costs," said Arvind Krishna, IBM vice president for database servers and development. "We are excited to offer new capabilities in DB2 that make it even easier for them to do so."
