New data appliance vendor Schooner Information Technologies emerged from stealth mode with two "data appliances" that can supposedly replace regular servers at a 1-to-8 ratio.
The two appliances are the Schooner Appliance for MySQL Enterprise and the Schooner Appliance for Memcached.
They incorporate 512 GB of Intel X24-E flash memory, 64 GB of DRAM, and the new Intel Nehalem server processors).
They also run on their own Schooner Operating Environment (SOE), which handles system resources and memory as well as system optimization.
Schooner claims that each appliance can replace up to eight ordinary servers while being completely compatible with existing MySQL Enterprise of Memcached applications and tools.
The company claims savings to the data center not only from the lower initial hardware costs, but also up to 60 percent savings in power, cooling, space, and networking requirements.
Schooner positions the new appliances as solutions for the demands of Web 2.0 and cloud computing.
Company president and CEO John Busch said, "The performance issues, massive data growth, and energy inefficiencies associated with Web 2.0 and data-intensive enterprises are crippling businesses. It was seeing these pain points that led Schooner to create a new generation of data access appliances"
