OzHub, the Macquarie Telecom-led cloud computing alliance, has come down firmly on the side of Optus over the copyright controversy surrounding Optus TV Now, warning that any moves to change the law "risk branding Australia a global luddite state."
HTC has launched the new HTC HD touchscreen Windows Mobil smartphone in Australia, exclusive to Next G until 30 April touting it has having the biggest screen of any similar device on the market.
The HD's screen is being touted as being 3.8 inches 'wide'. However it is 3.8 inches on the diagonal, which puts it only slightly ahead of the iPhone (3.5 inches on the diagonal), but with a 480 x 800 resolution it is well ahead of the iPhone's 320 x 480.
The user interface has been designed specifically to make access to Telstra's online services and apps easy: for example watching online Foxtel movies over Next G, and getting access to other specific video channels via BigPond is via dedicated 'soft' buttons on the touch screen menus.
The HD is also preconfigured for a new Whereis navigation packages that will be available for download in March and that will provide full turn by turn navigation either for a subscription of $15 per month or on a pay per use basis.
The HD has no mechanical push buttons but there are four dedicated touch points external to the screen. Tactile feed back is provided on these and on screen buttons: the phone vibrates briefly as they are pressed.
Another interesting feature is the flip-to-silence. For those of us who forget to turn our phones to silent in meetings, if it rings when face up turning it face down will silence it and divert the call to a preset number.
HTC is touting the HD as having been "designed for both business and consumer alike," but at $1499 may prove a tad pricey for many consumers. It will be available from Telstra for $62.45 per month on a 24 month $150 per month service contract.
Other features include: HSPA at 7.2Mbps, a 5 megapixel primary camera, microSD card slot (it ships with an 8MB CD card) and a standard 3.5mm audio jack, an innovation which ANZ marketing director Anthony Petts said had been added in response to customer feedback.
The 1350mAH battery is claimed to deliver up to six hours talk time or almost a month on standby on a 3G network. The HD measures 115x62.8x12mm and weighs 146.4gms. The phone runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
