New SDXC spec promises 2 terabytes on a memory card

Business IT - Technology

So you thought the SDHC memory card spec that allows for capacities up to 32G was enough to meet your mobile data needs for a while yet? Wait until you see the forthcoming SDXC specs.

The SD family of memory cards - including the miniSD and microSD variants - are widely used in electronic devices such as mobile phones and still and video cameras.

The current SDHC standard provides for capacities ranging from 4G to 32G, and supports various minimum transfer rates from 2MBps to 6MBps.

But the growing use of SD cards in high-definition camcorders means even 32G might not be enough.

And so the SD Association expects to release the SDXC (SD eXtended Capacity) specification this quarter, which will provide for capacities up to 2T.

According to the Association, 2T is enough to store 480 hours of HD recordings or 136,000 "fine-grade" photos. It could also hold thousands of RAW camera images.

By my count, its also enough for around a quarter of a million MP3 tracks. A lot of pronouncements have been proved wrong over time, but it seems safe to say that we've got music storage licked.
