First specification emerges from Metadata Working Group

Business IT - Technology

The idea is to define ways in which existing standards can be used so that metadata is preserved and appropriately used.

For example, the guidelines say a 'changer' (typically a photo editing or library application) should update both the Exif and XMP forms of a piece of metadata, but if for some reason only one can be updated, the other must be deleted. Having two different values for the same concept would be confusing at best.

The guidelines also set out rules for which metadata schemes should be given priority when reading a file. For instance, Exif is preferred to XMP,  and XMP is normally preferred to IPTC-IIM.

Since all devices and programs following the guidelines will use the same priorities, many interoperability issues will be overcome if the guidelines are widely adopted. Given the companies involved in the Group, this seems highly likely.

"Lack of metadata interoperability has led to significant frustration for both consumer and pro photographers, and our companies have spent considerable resources trying to deal with the problem," said Josh Weisberg, chairman and founder of the Metadata Working Group and director of Microsoft's rich media group.

"Getting these industry leaders together to rally around metadata interoperability is a real turning point, one that we believe will result in technology that's easier for photographers to use. We’ve been working very hard to produce guidelines that are compatible across all applications, devices and services and that provide best practices for how, when and where metadata should be changed in popular file formats."

On the hardware side, Masaya Maeda, Canon's chief executive of image communication products operations said "Canon is always looking for ways to make digital photography easier and more convenient."

"The metadata guidelines we’ve developed through the Metadata Working Group are an important first step in making digital photography more accessible."
