Want Linux under Windows? Microsoft and Novell hype it up!

Business IT - Technology

So back to SUSE and Hyper-V. The adaptors that Microsoft and Novell are providing make SUSE an optimised, or 'enlightened' guest OS. Roughly speaking, an enlightened guest operating system that knows it is running in a Hyper-V virtual environment and more importantly is able to use that knowledge to perform I/O operations more efficiently.

With the right drivers and services, an enlightened Hyper-V guest can deliver performance much closer to that which would be available if it was running directly on the hardware.

"Together, we offer our customers dramatic cost savings and greatly enhance overall business agility, allowing them to leverage SUSE Linux Enterprise Server as the best virtualised guest for those who are using Hyper-V," said said Roger Levy, Novell's general manager and senior vice president, open platform solutions.

"Novell has worked closely with Microsoft on virtualization solutions, and was a charter member of its Server Virtualization Validation Program, with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server a fully supported and validated operating system on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V."

One thing’s for sure: Microsoft and Novell are doing all they can to ensure that the synergy between SUSE, Windows and Hyper-V lives up to the hype!
