Qualcomm & Philips team to WiFi enable cellphones

CDMA pioneer, Qualcomm, has announced collaboration with Philips Semiconductor that will see chipsets available by the end of 2005 that will enable the creation of combined cellular, WiFi mobile handsets.

Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem chipsets will support Philips' wireless local area network (WLAN) module and the combined product will be compatible with the 802.11b and 802.11g WiFi protocols on both CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) networks.

Qualcomm's MSM6550 chipset with the 802.11b/g capabilities enabled by Philips' WLAN module are scheduled to be commercially available by the end of 2005.
