All variants include free-fall detection that can park the heads to prevent a crash in the event of a fall from as little as 8in (20cm).

While solid state drives are becoming popular for notebooks and subnotebooks such as the Asus Eee PC and Apple's MacBook Air due to their light weight, low power consumption and mechanical ruggedness, they are currently too expensive where large amounts of storage are involved.

The new Momentus drives are scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 2008.
