Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
During quiet periods, an application and its virtual machine may share a physical server with others. But greater resources may be needed at times of peak load, in which case the VM may be given exclusive use of a server.
This flexibility can require the ability to seamlessly move virtual machines from one physical server to another, so that the minimum amount of hardware is running at any time. Known as live migration, this feature is provided by VMware but not Hyper-V, which takes a few seconds to make the switch.
Microsoft has been using Hyper-V in its own production environment, including the Microsoft.com, MSDN and TechNet web sites which in aggregate average more than 42 million page views per day.
A big selling point for Hyper-V compared with competing virtualisation software (notably VMware, although that family of products includes a free version) is that it is free. More precisely, it is free with a Windows Server 2008 licence. Those using other operating systems will be able to buy Hyper-V as a separate product later this year for $US28.
Microsoft is also promoting Hyper-V's integration with Windows Server and the company's management tools.
"It's been designed as a Windows feature, which our customers know, so those with Windows Server certification will be familiar with it; the people who have all the in-house skills on Windows Server will know how to use it," said Hilf.
Close to 1.5 million copies of the Hyper-V beta have been distributed. The release version is available for immediate download from Microsoft's web site. It will show up in Windows Update for Windows Server 2008 on July 8.
System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, used to configure and deploy Hyper-V-based environments, is still in beta.
