Open Screen Alliance seeks common platform from phones to TVs

A newly formed alliance aims to deliver consistent rich Internet experiences via a wide range of devices.

Adobe's Open Screen Project is supported by chipmakers, device makers, carriers and content providers.

The idea is to provide content and applications publishers with a single environment that will work on desktop and notebook computers, mobile phones, mobile Internet devices and set top boxes.

Not surprisingly, the project revolves around Adobe's Flash and AIR. The company's contributions will include removing restrictions on use of the SWF and FLV/F4V specifications, publishing the device porting layer APIs for Flash Player as well as the Flash Cast and AMF protocols, and removing licensing fees on the next major releases of Flash Player and AIR for devices.

"Adobe is spearheading the Open Screen Project with support from industry leaders who share a common vision to provide rich, interactive experiences across computers, devices and consumer electronics," said Shantanu Narayen, chief executive officer at Adobe.

"A consistent, more open platform for developers will drive rapid innovation, vastly improving the user experience."
