Mozy goes Mac

Business IT - Technology

EMC's Mozy remote backup service has been extended to Macintosh users with the arrival of MozyHome for Mac.

Free accounts provide a maximum of 2G of backup, while $US4.95 per month buys "unlimited" storage.

Like Apple's own Backup application (which requires a .Mac account), the "scrumdidliumptious" MozyHome for Mac client provides a variety of predefined backup sets (equivalent to QuickPicks in Apple's terminology) to simplify the selection of common file sets such as application preferences, Safari bookmarks or Microsoft Word documents. Individual files or folders may also be selected.

The client to be set to start backups on a timed schedule or whenever the computer is not in use and has a low CPU load. Bandwidth throttling can be applied to limit the impact of backup on normal operation, but there doesn't seem to be any way of limiting backup to particular hours such as the ISP's off-peak period.

MozyHome for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Mozy also offers online backup for business users, with features such as the ability to administer multiple users and backup of file servers. MozyPro for Mac will go into beta test this northern Summer, and Mozy is accepting applications.

MozyHome and MozyPro are already available for Windows.
