Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The Guinness World Record for the world's lightest mobile phone has been awarded to the modu from the Israeli company of the same name. It weighs in at just 40.1 grammes and which at 72.1 x 37.6 x 7.8mm is considerably smaller than a credit card.
The basic modu is a fully functional cellphone but is designed to be inserted into a variety of modu mates that add additional functionality, such as MP3 player or GPS, or into a number of modu jackets that change its appearance.
The modu phone was launched at the GSM World Congress in Barcelona and modu claims that "Leading mobile network operators (MNOs) with a total of tens of millions of subscribers have already committed to modu, signing strategic partnerships that will see the first modu products available in the fourth quarter of 2008." The MNOs are Telecom Italia's mobile division TIM, BeeLine (VimpelCom) of Russia and Cellcom in Israel.
Zack Weisfeld, modu's VP marketing, said that modu had "worked tirelessly to take modu from the drawing board to producing full working devices in less than a year. From the outset, modu's tiny dimensions and super light weight have been fundamental to delivering the disruptive, modular communication concept that modu embodies."
Modu (www.modumobile.com) was established in early 2007 by Dov Moran, founder and CEO of mystems which claimed to have invented the USB flash drive, flash disk and "other ground breaking products." msystems was sold to San Disk in 2006 for $US1.6 billion.
The modu management team is comprised of executives and managers from msystems, Qualcomm, Intel, Microsoft, Texas instruments SanDisk, Intel Symbian, Marvell and Orange. The company says it has "raised significant initial funding form a distinguished group of financial institutions and strategic investors."
