VoIP arrives for iPod touch

Business IT - Technology

Software created by a small team of developers allows the iPod touch to be used as a Wi-Fi VoIP handset.

The touchmods crew has released a beta version of the software, describing it as "the world's first free SIP-VoIP application for the iPod touch".

A video showing the software in action has been posted on YouTube.

There's a hardware barrier, as the iPod touch lacks a microphone. Along with the software, touchmods has released instructions for building a microphone that attaches to the dock connector, and for modifying a commercially available iPod mic. The team also plans to sell suitable microphones for €29.90.

The touchmods software is said to be compatible with various VoIP providers including Freecall, SIPphone, VoipBuster and VoipCheap, and with the popular Asterisk open-source IP PABX.

The iPod touch must be subjected to the 'jailbreak' process before the touchmods software can be installed.
