QuickBooks users that lost data as a result of the recent update fiasco are being offered free data recovery software.
According to
MacFixIt, QuickBooks owners that notified Intuit that the contents of their desktop folder was destroyed by the flawed update process have received an email offering to reimburse the cost of a copy of Prosoft's Data Rescue II.
The email reportedly contains instructions for receiving the update.
Some QuickBooks users have said they were able to successfully recover files using Data Rescue II. The problem with any data recovery software is that if the computer has been in use for any amount of time, it is likely to recover a large number of files and file fragments, leaving the user with the task of trawling through them in an attempt to identify useful or important items.
The problem stems from recently released updater for QuickBooks which contained a bug that replaced the Desktop folder with a file called Desktop. In the process deleted all files stored on the desktop. Intuit soon corrected the problem, but for many users the damage was already done, leaving them wondering how the update passed quality assurance testing.
