Simpler workaround for non-US FileMaker woes? [UPDATED]

Business IT - Technology

Steve McManus, FileMaker's Australian managing director said the company would not recommend or endorse these workarounds. According to McManus the development team has been working "flat out" last week and through the weekend, and he expects the worldwide English update will be available before the self-imposed target of November 19, "but I can't guarantee that."

He suggests Australian users watch the company's local web site for the latest information, or register to have news emailed to them. "We're doing our absolute darndest, it's an absolute priority."

The first patch will only address the issue around the language settings. The failure of the Instant Web Publishing feature "affects a very small group of our customers," McManus said, and will take longer to fix.

Server-related issues will also require more detailed investigation, and McManus does not expect to see a fix before early 2008. He suggested that it is not so urgent anyway, as customers are likely to be in less of a hurry to update their servers to Mac OS X 10.5 than they are their desktop systems.

Some users seem to be holding FileMaker to a particularly high standard because it is an Apple subsidiary, but it is kept at arm's length from Apple and receives information and updates at the same time as other developers. "We do not get any special attention from Apple," McManus said.

"We've always supported Apple," he added, observing that it was the first major vendor to ship an Intel-native version of its Mac software.
