The Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA) has launched an internship and work experience program for university students designed to educate prospective employees and encourage new young talent into the rapidly growing mobile content industry.

The program, an initiative of the AIMIA Mobile Industry Group, is claimed to "bring together Australian tertiary education organisations and companies operating in the mobile content industry to give students a formal, structured internship opportunity while still studying or after recently graduating."

Mobile industry companies already committed to the internship program include the ABC, Amethon, Hyro, News Digital Media, ninemsn, Sensis, Telstra, The Weather Company, TigerSpike and Yahoo7!.

AIMIA CEO John Butterworth said: "While tertiary education is an integral part of the skilling process in the industry, practical experience is invaluable for upcoming employees and their employers. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for students to gain professional experience and apply theory learnt in their studies, it also helps employers secure graduates who are the right-fit for the company in terms of skills and culture...This is a small step by AIMIA to solve a much larger industry recruitment issue, however it is a constructive contribution to help digital companies fill positions with more realistic and experienced entry level employees."

The internship program was formed through consultation with academic institutions, students and a variety of Australian organisations operating in the mobile content sector. Its formal launch follows a pilot internship scheme involving the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Hyro and ninemsn early in 2007.

According to Hyro's director, wireless and broadcast, Chris Flintoft, "The pilot has proved a great success. It's been a fantastic opportunity for us to tap into some of the brightest young talent in Australia. Our first intern has now become a full time member of the team at Hyro. We look forward to being an integral part of the scheme in years ahead."
