Gaps identified in Linux for telco carriers

Business IT - Technology

The SCOPE Alliance, a grouping of major telecoms networking equipment vendors, that last year published a profile for a telco carrier-grade Linux operating system, has updated the profile to identify gaps in the current specification.

Following the publication of the iinitial carrier grade Linux profiles, versions 1 & 1.1, published in 2006, the SCOPE Alliance has created a companion document, version 1.2, which includes a prioritised list of requirements and a description of functions that the network equipment providers view as critical in a Linux operating system distribution used in carrier grade base platforms when creating control and service plane network elements.

Linux profiles (Versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2) are available for download from the SCOPE Alliance website.

The SCOPE Alliance has also updated its technical position paper (Scoping the SCOPE – Closing the Gaps of Open Carrier Grade Base Platforms). This update, version 1.1, contains adjustments to the carrier grade base platform reference architecture and also refines the SCOPE Alliance's areas of near term emphasis in the context of this architecture.
