Samsung aims 7200rpm 2.5in drive at enterprises

Business IT - Technology

Samsung's SpinPoint MP1 2.5in hard drives offer up to 200G of storage for enterprise applications including workstations, RAID server and blade servers.

To be offered in 80, 120, 160 and 200G versions, the 7200rpm drives will go into mass production in May.

The high capacity for the small form factor comes from the use of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR). A 3.0Gbps SATA interface, native command queuing and 8 or 16M of cache contribute to the performance required for the intended uses.

Even though the SpinPoint MP1 isn't specifically intended for notebook use, the drives do include a rotary vibration controller to maintain head tracking despite severe vibration, and a free-fall sensor is optional. The company has also announced the SpinPoint M5 family for mobile devices including notebooks.
