Stock pump spammers target Firefox enthusiasts

Business IT - Security

Illicit spammers are attempting to harness the enthusiasm of the Firefox community in their latest brazen bid to artificially pump up stock prices.

One current 'pump and dump' email doing the rounds carries the subject line "Mozilla Taiwan volunteers spread the word about Firefox in downtown Taipei".

However, the message itself suggests that buyers invest in a company known as China Health Mgt New -- an ironic development given the long-running disputes over sovereignty between China and Taiwan.

Stock promotion scammers are noted for using virtually any subject line in their messages, both to attract the interest of potential investors and to counter anti-spam software which relies on keywords to detect unwanted messages.

However, appealing to enthusiasts for Firefox -- the open-source browser which is estimated to have as much as 20% of the overall market -- is a new twist.

According to anti-malware developer Sophos, pump-and-dump scams account for around 15% of all spam.
