Symantec is lobbying hard in the EU to have antitrust regulators force
Microsoft to open up access to its operating system kernel for security
vendors and has threatened to lodge a formal complaint with the
European Commission.
Symantec has issued a statement accusing
Microsoft of using its operating system monopoly to jeopardize the
security of users:
“As a company, Symantec believes that choice among products competing
on a level playing field provides the best security. By using its
control over the operating system to force users to use only security
solutions offered by Microsoft and to limit the ability of independent
security vendors to develop compatible security solutions, Microsoft is
jeopardizing computer security rather than enhancing it.
"With Vista, customers around the world lose their ability to choose
what security solutions best suit their needs. A lack of choice for
customers prevents them from having the widest variety of options for
security solutions to quickly address a constantly evolving landscape
of security threats. In the end, a less secure Internet will result
and both consumers and enterprises will find themselves more vulnerable
to cyber attack.”
