MySpace banner causes spyware headache for million users

Business IT - Security

MySpace may be the world's most visited website, according to analytics firm HitWise. However, more than one million of those visitors may have now got spyware and adware problems as a result of clicking on an errant banner advertisement posted on the site.

The banner ad, discovered by an analyst at security firm iDefense, was posted by a site called deckoutyourdeck.com and exploited a flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser which caused users to visit a number of web sites and download adware and spyware.

The flaw exploited a hole in Internet Explorer, which has been patched since January, which allowed a Trojan horse program to be downloaded through a WMF image.

Once infected, users' machines receive unwanted pop-up ads and constant monitoring of their activity while online.

It is not entirely clear how a high profile web site such as MySpace could enable an illegal advertisement containing malware to be served to its pages from its network of ad servers.
