A recent survey by data protection vendor Acronis has found that although the desire exists for a single integrated data protection solution, too many organisations still separate Backup from Disaster Recovery.
At their recent Tech.Ed stand, Acronis surveyed attendees for thoughts on their current state of both backup and disaster recovery strategies.
The results, although not good, confirmed the fears of many. Historical factors seem to continue to keep Disaster Recovery and Server Backup as separate activities.
A total of 1476 responses were received, representing 801 separate organisations, of which 44.5% had over 100 servers and 17.6% less than 10 servers.
The survey discovered that 69% of the organisations currently have separate software solutions for Disaster Recovery and for Data Protection, although more than half expressed a desire for a single solution.
Karl Sice, General Manager, Pacific at Acronis, said: "The survey gives us an excellent snapshot of the current situation in Australia. Our larger organisations, with dedicated ICT resources, are struggling with effective backup and recovery strategies and the issue is even more profound in smaller organisations with very limited resources."
In general, the larger the company, the more likely a single solution existed to deal with both physical and virtual servers, although many smaller organisations (12% of companies with fewer than 10 physical servers) admitted to no recovery solution for virtual servers at all.
Finally, when it comes to cloud solutions, 85% of respondents claimed to have either implemented or have planned some kind of cloud-based backup.
