New Axis surveillance cameras focus on edge storage

Business IT - Security

Network video camera specialist Axis has released two new series of surveillance cameras. The company sees edge storage as an important feature for IP cameras.

The Axis M1043-W (SVGA) and M1044-W (720p) cameras are designed for small retail, hospitality and residential premises. Features include 802.11n with WPS, PIR, a white LED light, integrated microphone and speaker, one input and one output port, and support for edge storage.

"We believe that the small and smart design, together with new features will make these cameras the ideal choice for small businesses, retail and residential video surveillance," said Wai King Wong, Axis country manager for South Pacific.

Axis is promoting edge storage as an important feature for robust surveillance. While local storage has been available in cameras for some time, it has now been closely coupled with video management software (VMS) from companies such as Aimetis, Genetec, Milestone, OnSSI and SeeTec.

When the network or VMS is disrupted, cameras can store data locally on memory cards, and then fed into the VMS when normal operation is restored. They can also record to NAS devices if the network is functioning but the VMS has failed.

It also allows bandwidth conservation by recording locally at full resolution while streaming at lower resolutions. Material of interest can be then retrieved at full quality.
