What's changing is that the company will in future issue two versions of the Exploitability Index for each new vulnerability. One will reflect the likelihood of exploitation on the latest software (eg, Windows 7); the other will provide aggregated guidance for previous versions (eg, Windows XP and Vista).

For example, the Excel integer overrun vulnerability disclosed last month would have an Exploitability Index of 2 on the latest software, but 1 on older versions.

According to Maarten Van Horenbeeck, a senior security program manager at Microsoft, 97 of the 256 vulnerabilities disclosed in the last eight months are less serious or not applicable to the latest software versions.

"By giving an assessment of the exploitability and impact, of an issue, we hope to support IT administrators in making rational decisions on which security updates to install first," he said.
