Reports in the past day have identified a new virus directly targeting Iranian infrastructure.
Commander of civil defence, Gholamreza Jalali has been reported as telling the Mehr news agency that the new virus, called "Stars", was being investigated by experts.
"Fortunately, our young experts have been able to discover this virus and the Stars virus is now in the laboratory for more investigations," Jalali told the agency. There was no information regarding the intended target of the attack.
"The particular characteristics of the Stars virus have been discovered," Jalali said. "The virus is congruous and harmonious with the [computer] system and in the initial phase it does minor damage and might be mistaken for some executive files of government organizations."
At a high-level, this is clearly similar to Stuxnet, probably targetting the SCADA systems controlling the various nuclear facilities in the country, although whether a virus as sophisticated as Stuxnet was would be detected as easily as this appears to have been seems to suggest that it might be from a lesser source, however the reference to "executive files' suggests it is tightly woven into the executable components of Windows, making it difficult to identify and extract.
However, in typical belligerent fashion, Jalali added, "Perhaps the Foreign Ministry had overlooked the options to legally pursue the case, and it seems our diplomatic apparatus should pay more attention to follow up the cyber wars staged against Iran,"
