Australia on Yimfoca malware hit list

A security vendor has warned that Australia is on the list of countries specifically targeted by the latest variants of the Yimfoca malware.


According to Symantec's Stephen Doherty, Australia is one of 44 countries being targeted by the Yimfoca.B malware.

Yimfoca affects several versions of Windows (including XP, Vista and Server 2003, but not Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008) and spreads via instant messaging applications.

The B variant also infects removable drives with a copy of itself masquerading under the names of pre-existing folders. It also download additional malware.

The worm sends IMs containing malicious links along with enticing texts such as "seen this?? :D" and "This is the funniest photo ever!".

Other English-speaking countries targeted by Yimfoca.B are Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, and United States. A total of 44 countries and nearly 20 languages are targeted.
