AVG LinkScanner and Security Toolbar help users avoid malicious web sites. Black hat SEO techniques are increasingly used to elevate malicious pages into the top results for popular search terms.
One example is Websense's warning about the way the bad guys are already targeting those interested in the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
LinkScanner (freeware) marks search results with a safe/risky/dangerous indicator, while the Security Toolbar (part of AVG's security suites, which start at $A69.99) uses the technology underlying LinkScanner to warn users of malicious sites before they are actually loaded by the browser.
"AVG is committed to providing our users with intuitive technology that allows them to proactively prevent computer infections while they search the web. Combining the power of AVG's state-of-the-art technology with Google search technology makes perfect sense," said JR Smith, CEO of AVG Technologies.
