13 Microsoft vulnerabilities to be fixed on September Patch Tuesday

Business IT - Security

September is going to be another big month for security updates from Microsoft, with nine security bulletins covering 13 vulnerabilities.

Microsoft is preparing to release patches for 13 vulnerabilities affecting Windows, Internet Information Services, and Office.

The overall severity of the issues is relatively low this month, with just four of the bulletins carrying a maximum rating of critical. The other five are regarded as important.

Furthermore, none of the Windows issues are rated critical for Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2. Only three out of eight bulletins apply to these operating systems, and each of those is only rated important on Microsoft's latest operating systems.

Older versions of Windows are harder hit. Vista and Server 2008 are affected by five bulletins, two critical and three important. All eight bulletins apply to XP and Server 2003.

One Office bulletin gets a critical rating, and applies to Outlook 2002, 2003 and 2007. The other is considered important, and affects Office XP, 2003 and 2007.

As usual, Microsoft will also release an updated version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
