Microsoft's mega Patch Tuesday

August's Patch Tuesday has seen the delivery of 14 security bulletins from Microsoft. More than half are rated critical, and a total of 34 vulnerabilities are addressed.

This month's batch of security updates from Microsoft covers all currently supported versions of Windows, and more.

The operating system lineup is as follows:

Windows XP: eight critical, three important
Vista: five critical, seven important
Windows 7: five critical, five important, one moderate
Server 2003: five critical, two important, one moderate
Server 2008: three critical, six important, one moderate
Server 2008 R2: three critical, five important, two moderate

The overall severity of the issues appears to be lower with newer versions of Windows, suggesting that Microsoft's efforts to improve the inherent security of its products is having an effect.

There are two bulletins applying to Microsoft Office, one critical and one important.
