Every month Websense publishes a short summary of the total spam detected by their systems. July shows it's business-as-usual for both sides.
Analysing 4.2 billion messages in a month will give you a good perspective on the levels of span around the world.
Websense summarises the results of its outsourced spam detection services into a short monthly newsletter. This month, they observe the highest-ever proportion to spam to total email (89.3%) with the majority of that spam (88.6%) containing an embedded URL.
Almost-gone are the days of the self-contained 419 (Nigerian) scam email!
Further, the summary observes that 3.5% of spam messages were some kind of phishing attack.
The final observation, discussed in a number of
places, is that shortened URLs (from bit.ly etc) are both more prevalent and more likely to be used to obscure nefarious web sites.
It's a jungle out there.
