The new version of VMware's Zimbra email and collaboration software features new data sharing capabilities along with other improvements.
Zimbra Collaboration Suite has been renamed Zimbra Collaboration Server, and version 7 is now available, as are beta versions of Zimbra Desktop 7 and Zimbra Appliance 7.
New features include the Briefcase for cloud-based file sharing and storage (with check-out/check-in capability); searching for people via contact lists, organisation charts, seating charts and other formats; support for OpenID, SAML and Kerberos; improved administration with role-based delegation; improved mobile support (including native app sync and a connector to BlackBerry Enterprise Server); email and SMS reminders for calendar events; and better support for finding mutually convenient times for meetings and appointments.
Manish Sharma, head of emerging products at VMware Asia Pacific and Japan, said "Zimbra 7 builds on VMware's base of 66 million paid Zimbra mailboxes and 200,000 companies using Zimbra as a SaaS collaboration solution. The new cloud capabilities in Zimbra 7 take a step ahead of the market in anticipating what the next generation cloud workspace will be like with decentralized desktops as well as cloud-based messaging, collaboration and calendaring.
"Emerging markets in Asia Pacific now have the opportunity to use Zimbra 7 to leapfrog more matured markets in establishing business collaboration platforms that are more productive, open and manageable than current offerings."
