The Internet Systems Consortium has called for more people to download and test version 10 of the venerable BIND software that is used to run domain name servers.
In a media release, ISC said more than 1700 copies of the software had been downloaded since the first code was released in April this year marking the first deliverable of a five-year plan.
BIND is the most widely deployed DNS software on the net.
Shane Kerr, programme manager, said that in the second year of development, the objective was to implement a recursive validating DNS resolver.
Work was also planned on performance tuning for the authoritative server, work on a DHCP implementation and initial development of the command language.
"Community involvement is critical to the success of BIND 10 development. BIND has long enjoyed community participation in our software development process and we're thrilled to see it flourishing with BIND 10," Kerr said.
"In alignment with ISC's public benefit charter, we depend on sponsors and donors to support ISC's initiatives - particularly BIND 10."
The documentation for BIND 10 is here and development releases are available for download every six weeks.
