When it comes to virtualisation, VMware, Microsoft's Hyper-V, and the Citrix-backed Xen get the lion's share of attention, but the open source VirtualBox is gaining a lot of friends. The latest release - VirtualBox 2.2.4 - includes plenty of fixes.
VirtualBox is an x86 virtualisation product available under the GPL. The product is backed by Sun, which offers enterprise licences with support.
VirtualBox runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris, and supports a variety of 32 and 64-bit guest operating systems "at near-native speeds."
Changes in version 2.2.4 include a number of fixes for network, virtual disk and virtual memory related problems, as well as host-specific fixes affecting all four platforms.
