Business IT - Open Source

Sun Microsystems and the University of Queensland have joined forces to produce the first ever Kernel Conference Australia in July this year. Speakers include luminaries from Sun, Intel, BSD and Apple.

If you're interested in open source kernels and the technologies used within them then mark the 15th-17th July 2009 in your diary. That's the date of the Kernel Conference Australia, to be held at the Queensland Brain Institute on the University of Queensland campus.

Original presentations are being sought, presenting theory, techniques, applications and practical experiences on a variety of topics that may include

  • Cross-architecture kernel development
  • Porting an OS to a new architecture
  • Filesystems
  • System performance visualisation (DTrace, SystemTap)
  • Image visualisation (GPU kernels)
  • Fault Management
  • (globally) Distributed kernel development - how to make it work
  • Virtualisation
  • Clustering (HPC and High Availability)
  • Distributed systems
  • Kernel Testing - methodologies, interesting problems found
  • Traps and pitfalls found when porting drivers between OSes
  • Realtime performance and scheduling
  • Embedded OSes and drivers (including control systems)
  • Patents and Open Source
  • The state of OS kernel research / what's new / work in progress

Apart from the above, any kernel-focused topic for an Open Source Licensed operating system will be considered by the organising committee.

Invited speakers include Jeff Bonwick, Galvin Maltby, Bill Moore, Sherry Moore, Adam Leventhal and Brendan Gregg from Sun Microsystems, Dave Stewart from Intel, Theo de Raadt and Pawel Jakub Dawidek from FreeBSD and Noel Dellafano from Apple.

The program committee consists of James C. McPherson and John Sonnesnschein from Sun Microsystems, Jake Carroll and David Gwynne from the University of Queensland, Andrae van Eyssen from Frontline and Clinton Roy from the CSIRO.

Initial three page abstracts are being sought with camera-ready copy of accepted proposals due by 1st July 2009 in PDF form.

The conference proceedings will be collated and published on cd/dvd for attendees, and electronically for those unable to attend in person.
