But anyone with that attitude wouldn't be using Microsoft's development tools in the first place, so Oxite wouldn't be of much use or interest to them anyway.

The software has been downloaded over 1300 times since its release on December 6. Microsoft might not be the poster child of the open source crowd but someone's showing interest in Oxite.

The only other question is whether Oxite is more than just a kite-flying exercise to see how popular a Microsoft-originated open source product might be.

Still, despite what some Linux aficionados think about Microsoft, the company does have some very smart people.
