Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Growth in Linux vendor Red Hat's Asia-Pacific engineering and support business has resulted in a move to new premises. The world's biggest specialist Linux company's Brisbane, Australia, site is now its largest engineering centre in the region.
While the company's Asia-Pacific engineering and support headquarters has been in Brisbane for nine years, the new centre accommodates recent and planned growth.
In addition to customer support, activities at the centre include software research and development, product engineering, project management and software engineering.
In particular, Brisbane is home to Red Hat's core graphics engineering team and the company's main translation team, which handles localisation for 13 languages including German, French, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Indonesian.
What brought the company to Brisbane? "A grant from the Queensland Government was a significant factor in establishing our Brisbane presence, and a study by KPMG had also recognised the city near the top of the list for IT competitiveness. Brisbane also offers a promising talent pool of quality, multi-lingual graduates and 'upstream' open source community representatives," said Paul Gampe, Red Hat's vice president, engineering services and operations.
That talent pool is fostered by Red Hat's sponsorship of Honours research students at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and a research collaboration with QUT looking into open source localisation.
Red Hat's new premises were officially opened today by the Queensland Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry, Desley Boyle.
