Apache gains Yahoo! sponsorship

Business IT - Open Source

Yahoo! has become a platinum sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation, which supports the Apache web server and other open source projects.

Platinum sponsorship involves a donation of at least $US100,000 per year, of which no more that 25 percent can be in-kind services.

"Yahoo! is one of the few companies in the world that has the necessary resources, expertise and experience to build software of this quality and scale," said David Filo, Yahoo! co-founder.

"Sponsoring the ASF demonstrates our commitment to quality open source infrastructure. Both Yahoo! and the open source community have benefited from collaborating with the ASF, and we're proud to be able to give back - by sharing our expertise and technology, as well as on a financial basis. We look forward to furthering our participation with the ASF in years to come," he added.

Some Yahoo! employees are actively involved in the development of Apache Hadoop, a platform for processing massive data sets on clusters of commodity hardware.

"Sponsorship is key to our financial viability, which, in turn, benefits the open source community at large," said ASF President Justin Erenkrantz. "Yahoo!'s participation helps ensure that both our developer community and distributed computing projects continue to grow."

Google is already a platinum sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation. HP is the sole gold sponsor, and Covalent is the only silver sponsor.

Bronze sponsors are business travel management solutions provider AirPlus International, independent contractor Tetsuya Kitahata, and technology and finance firm Two Sigma Investments.
