Akismet requires a unique API key to work. You get this key by signing up at www.wordpress.com and following the instructions given. Note, this is wordpress.com and not wordpress.org, where you downloaded the free software.
WordPress intend this API key to give you extra services such as, in time, statistics and visitor details. At the moment the only use of the key is Akismet but that is compelling enough. If you allow people to add comments to your site then you will, as sure as night follows day, get spammers posting comments on your site. You can see the effect of comment spam easily on any of a myriad of forums. One example is Software Reality.
Keep your API key a secret, once you receive it. Once you’ve set it you can pretty much forget about it but if ever you need it again – because you’re setting up a new site, say – you can always retrieve it by signing back in to www.wordpress.com and clicking “My Profile”.
Return to your site’s dashboard; click Plugins. Click Activate next to Akismet; you’ll then get a message that Akismet needs the API key before it will work – but note the Akismet Configuration tab heading which now exists; click that and enter your API key. You can optionally check the box to automatically delete comment spam after a month; you might like to review the comments that have been flagged but personally I’ve found Akismet extremely reliable. Click Update Options and Akismet is now active.
You may not appreciate what Akismet does for you just now, but check its stats after several months and you’ll find – especially if your site shows up in Google – that it will have blocked hundreds to thousands of instances of spam. Without this, you’d get a message asking you to confirm or deny every single comment spam entry. And, if you allow unmoderated comments, you’d just find your site filling up with junk and becoming unreadable and worthless.
