Communications minister Stephen Conroy has announced commencement of construction of the NBN FTTH network to serve some 165,000 premises: a subset of the schedule of 750,000 previously announced by NBN Co in February.

"Rollout of the National Broadband Network is forging ahead with construction commencing for approximately 165,800 homes and businesses around the country," Conroy said.

He said that NBN had released maps which "show that the NBN rollout is ramping up across Australia, with NBN Co on track to meet its target of having construction commenced or completed for 758,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year."

NBN Co released in February an interactive map showing the over 750,000 homes where work had commenced or was planned to commence in the next 12 months. The map enabled users to input their address or postcode and see what the NBN rollout schedule for that location.

An NBN Co spokeswoman told iTWire that NBN had now released more maps providing details of 165,800 premises where construction had now commenced and was scheduled to be completed in about 12 months.

At completion of construction the NBN becomes active in the area and residents then have an 18 month window to sign up with an NBN service provider before services on Telstra copper are de-activated.

NBN Co announced last Wednesday 10 October details of 15 locations around the country with a total of about 25,000 premises for which that 18 month window will start on 23 November.
