Polycom extends HD videoconferencing to iPads and Android tablets - UPDATED

Business IT - Networking

Polycom has launched what it says is the first enterprise HD video software for tablets, initially the Apple iPad 2, Motorola XOOM and Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1.

This article has been updated to incorporate Polycom's justificaction of claiming a 'first' for the product, when others appear to be available,

The product, Polycom RealPresence Mobile, is available today for these platforms from their respective app stores and Polycom says support for other devices will follow. Motorola will offer the Xoom preloaded with the software before the end of 2011.

Last week another videoconferencing company, Vidyo, launched its VidyoMobile application for iOS4 claiming it "turns hundreds of millions of mobile devices into video conferencing and communication endpoints delivering up to 720p HD resolution with shared content viewing capability." Its Android version is in beta and is scheduled to be available in November.

In response to a question from iTWire on its claimed primacy, Polycom said: "The key differentiator is that the Polycom RealPresence Mobile application is 100 percent standards based and fully interoperable with existing enterprise video deployment. It supports both the H.323 video protocol and SIP, as well as all the additional protocols such as H.239 and BFCP for content sharing.

"This ensures that no external gateways or additional technology are required to integrate Polycom RealPresence mobile into existing enterprise video deployments. Organisations who already have video installed in their enterprise today can immediately expand their reach, and extend the corporate video network to tablet users.

"It also ensures that organisations that want to use Polycom RealPresence Mobile as their first step into corporate video deployment can do so with the confidence that the solution will be fully interoperable with any future standards based investment that they choose to make for additional video rollouts. Other vendors have proprietary solutions that can only communicate with their own components and through their own gateways.
