iPhone system unshackles lawyers

Business IT - Networking

When Amanda Given was driven out of her Brisbane office by the floods, she was glad that she’d chosen a remotely hosted computer system to run her legal practice. Over the last couple of weeks as she’s endured some fresh problems with her computers and fixed line connections, she’s been glad to be testing a system that has allowed her to access the data in her legal resource management system from her iPhone.

According to Ms Given, who is a sole practitioner and owner of Given Law, which specialises in personal injury matters, piloting the system meant that she was still able to access the information in the LRM even when all the office phones were diverted to her mobile and she was effectively working out of her car.

“I have a big litigation practice and I’ve got to keep doing what was needed while I’ve been homeless,” she explained. Ms Given uses the LRM “all day every day” she said to manage client interactions, draft and manage documents, update timesheets and monitor accounts.

After piloting the system with Ms Given local software company LawMaster has today formally released the iBench system to provide mobile access to its LRM application.

David Toohey, the chief executive of LawMaster, said that iBench allows lawyers to access all their practice information regardless of where they are and what device they are using, as long as it has browser access.

Although the company is describing it as part of its “cloud” computing package, LawMaster is essentially an application service provider offering remote hosting. While the service is offered on a pay as you go basis, it’s not entirely elastic and there are term contracts in place.

Nevertheless according to Mr Toohey; “The solution is highly secure and versatile.  It is purpose-built for Australian lawyers needing mobility and fast access to key legal practice resources no matter where they are working.   It promotes accurate professional decision making.”

LawMaster iBench is available on a monthly subscription, is integrated with the LawMaster suite and accessible to existing users as an optional module.
