Unwired's WiMAX wait is over: Navini ships 'WiMAX ready' base stations

Business IT - Networking

Navini Networks, the supplier of Unwired's wireless access technology, has announced commercial availability of what it claims is the first dual-mode 'mobile WiMAX' 802.16e wireless base station.
The Ripwave MX BTS, first announced in June 2005, is software upgradeable to 802.16e and will continue to support Navini's proprietary Smart Beamforming technology. The first Ripwave-MX BTS shipments are in the 3.5GHz frequency range, used by Unwired. These will be followed by shipments in other frequency bands over the next three to four months.

Navini announced this week that Scarlet, a long distance and Internet access provider in the Netherlands Antilles, had launched the first high speed broadband wireless network in Curacao, the largest and most populous island in the Netherlands Antilles, using its technology.

Curacao has a population of approximately 150,000, until recently served predominantly by dial-up services. DSL was introduced in 2005 and several small line-of-sight wireless providers serve niche markets. Scarlet expects to have island-wide coverage with its Navini network by early 2007.
