Telstra and Ericsson trial inter-capital videoconferencing over LTE

Telstra and Ericsson have announced successful trialling of videoconferencing over LTE between Sydney and Melbourne.

According to Ericsson, the trial involved integration of commercial LTE equipment into the operational Telstra network across four sites using LTE hardware and software that is being deployed on commercial LTE networks across the globe, and locally supported by the Ericsson LTE Global Competence Centre in Melbourne.

This is the third announced trial result since Telstra named Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks as LTE trial partners in March. Previous announced trials were with Nokia Siemens, demonstrating the ability of LTE to operate satisfactorily at up to 75kms from the base station,  and its use in the 2.6GHz spectrum

Telstra's executive director Telstra Networks & Access Technologies. Mike Wright said: "This trial is about integrating LTE into our Next G network, and seeing how it works end to end'¦We are not going to build a separate LTE network it has to integrate with our Next G network.

Ericsson added: "The Ericsson LTE Global Competence Centre in Melbourne is one of only three in the world and since 2008 it has been responsible for the development of LTE radio access network (RAN) capability for Ericsson globally. Customers supported out of Melbourne include Verizon, AT&T and MetroPCS in the US, TeliaSonera, Vodafone and numerous operators across Europe, SingTel and many additional operators across Asia.

Ericsson's LTE infrastructure for the Telstra trial included an end-to-end LTE RAN and EPC (evolved packet core) network comprising of eNodeB radio base stations, MME (mobility management entity), CPG (converged packet gateway), HSS (home subscriber server) and OSS (operational support system).

LTE terminal devices were Samsung USB dongles. Throughput of 80Mbps was achieved with 0.2 millisecond jitter.
