HP aims ProLiant MicroServer at SMEs

HP's new ProLiant MicroServer is designed for businesses with up to 10 employees. The selling point is that it provides server technologies such as ECC memory and pluggable drive bays at a price comparable to desktop PCs.


The HP ProLiant Microserver features a 1.3GHz AMD Athlon II CPU with 1GB of ECC RAM (expandable to 8GB), onboard VGA graphics, a 7200rpm 160GB SATA drive (up to four 2TB SATA drives can be installed internally and configured as RAID 0 or 1), and an optional half-height DVD or DVD-RW drive.

Other expansion facilities include two half-height, half-length PCI-e slots, and six external USB ports. The system is packaged in an ultra micro tower enclosure.

With prices starting at $A599, the MicroServer goes on sale this month.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows Server and are supported, but neither are included as part of the base configuration. Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Edition is available for $A339, or Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition for $A1100.

HP has also announced storage, network, telephony and systems management products aimed at the SME market.
