AAPT puts 1200 staff on Gmail

Business IT - Networking

AAPT today expanded its use of Google Apps, deploying Gmail, contacts and calendar service across its 1200-strong workforce.

The move follows AAPT adopting Google Apps for its intranet and internal video communications last October, and gmail on a very limited scale initially.

COO David Yuile said: "We've been running a pilot of 250 people on Gmail for the past two months and today's move for the remainder of the company has been a relatively straightforward experience for our 1200 users.

Last December AAPT also became a reseller of Google Apps and Yuile told iTWire at that time that the company would migrate its first 100 users to Gmail in January 2010. He said the company was planning a swift transition.

This week Yuile said: "The benefits of moving to Google Apps are significant - for individual users and for the company. We expect to reap considerable savings in IT costs, with minimal user support and much lower ongoing infrastructure costs…This exciting move will help us address some of the challenges we face: information overload, changing business needs and new technology demands, such as increased mobility and flexible working." Yuile said.

The Gmail platform also allows AAPT staff to use the Google Talk instant messaging application and provides each user with 25GB mailbox storage capacity.
